“Red Firefly 2010” Chapter 1

“Red Firefly 2010” was an experimental film, which developed from the series of photographs ‘Hearing Damage’ in 2010. It was a mixture of still and moving images. The film contained no dialogue or script to lead the audiences to any particular direction. It was purely a form of communication that the used of images became one of its language or sign. Therefore, it to convey its matter and emphasized the process together with the art method. Part of this project, I’ve got an inspiration from observing a rapidly grown city spaces under the capitalism and new cultural era. I used the images of high-rise building and construction site as a simulation of mimic nature. It also a practice led project, which observing the scene was part of physical experiences from perceiving information through eyes. The effectiveness of this film will be a sharing opinion of what we became who we are and what our city, lives, believing, faith or even myth lies within an everyday pictures or images we have seen. Do we aware of what might happen once technology and industry reach its peak? Do we aware of what we are living and what it actually look like now? I use ChiangMai only to be an experimental gateway of a message not that this means it has to happen only here, it was more about space and time. A development of understanding among the audiences may vary; depending on their own experiences they possessed. It might be about finding a middle path, not too open yet not too close.
Experimental Film “Red Firefly 2010” chapter 1, was part of “A Kind of Eden 2010 project”. (A site-specific installation) This was the first part in an experimental project. It was a work in collaboration with Dhanyapat Sajjalaksana; designer who now studying Textile Future at Central Saint Martins College of Art and Design in the UK. Designer was interested in the sound and the effect that cause from the city environment in London. As part of collaboration work, artist and designer was discussed and exchanged ideas that agreed to share such a similar concept even the place they live and their environmental was different. In the film, artist used moving images incorporate with sound from the designer’s sound research, which was collected during 2009-2010. In general, it was to present spaces in a different situation but seems to share the similarity of experience. Artist chose the gap in cultural distinction to represent the event that effected not only to the scenario of townscape and landscape but also soundscape to be include.
